Olber’s Paradox (also called dark sky paradox)
It states that if the universe is infinite static and timeless, and there are many luminous stars throughout the universe then why is the sky not brighter?

- The paradox was solved in 1929 by Edwin Hubble. He observed that the spectrum of all stars was slightly red, meaning the light coming from them was being stretched out.
- Means the light traveling through space was expanding.
- Also, the light of stars has a specific speed. There must be stars that are so far away, their light would take billions of years to reach us. So, if we give it billions of more years will we eventually be able to reach midnight? The answer is no.
- Hubble’s discovery of universal expansion also explained that:
- “The farther away something is, the faster the space between it is stretching out.”
- So, after a huge distance, space will be stretching out faster than light can close the gap.
- This means that expansion is causing the light emitted by the stars to stretch out so much that when it reaches our eyes, they cannot detect it
